  • General statistics on human trafficking

    • Traffickers profit at the expense of their victims by compelling them to perform labor or to engage in commercial sex in every region of the United States and around the world. With an estimated 49.6 million victims worldwide at any given time, human traffickers prey on people of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities, exploiting them for their own profit. (SOURCE)

    • Today, there are 49.6 million people in modern slavery worldwide, and 12 million of them are children.

    • 54% of those trapped in modern slavery are women and girls. (ILO)

    • Sex trafficking is the most common type of trafficking in the U.S. (Polaris)

    • Forced commercial sexual exploitation generates $173 billion in illegal profits annually. (ILO, 2024)

    • There were 88 million child sexual abuse material (CSAM) files reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) tip line in 2022.

    • Child sex trafficking has been reported in all 50 U.S. states. (NCMEC)

    • TYPES OF TRAFFICKING RECORDED IN 2023 IN TEXAS- SEX - 465 , LABOR - 218 , SEX + LABOR - 119

  • Common Types of Human Trafficking

    • Forced Labor – victims are forced to work against their will

    • Sex – individuals are required to engage in sexual acts

    • Forced Marriage – victims are forced to marry another person without giving consent

    • Domestic Servitude – forced labor that occurs in a private household

    • Child Soldiers – minors are used as fighters in acts of war

  • Signs of Human Trafficking

    • Person seems overly fearful, submissive, tense, or paranoid.

    • Person is deferring to another person before giving information.

    • Person has physical injuries or branding such as name tattoos on face or chest, tattoos about money and sex, or pimp phrases.

    • Clothing is inappropriately sexual or inappropriate for weather.

    • Minor is unaccompanied at night or falters in giving an explanation of who they are with and what they are doing.

    • Identification documents are held by another.

    • Person works long or excessive hours or is always available “on demand.”

    • Overly sexual for age or situation. • Multiple phones or social media accounts.

    • Signs of unusual wealth without explanation—new jewelry, shoes, phones without any known form of income.

    • Person lives in a “massage” business or is not free to come and go.
